Fibre is not only good for our bowel health, it can also help keep our hearts healthy and our blood sugar more stable.
We are constantly being told that we must eat more fibre and in particular, soluble fibre. In the US they are now recommending we consume 35grams of fibre per day. The fact is that most of us eat far less than this.

In rural Africa, where far higher levels of fibre are consumed than in the west – their average daily intake is estimated to be 55g per day – bowel disease is virtually unheard of.

There are 2 main types of fibre, soluble and insoluble. It is the soluble fibre that is attracting more attention these days because it can be so beneficial for our general well-being as well as bowel health. The reason for this is that soluble fibre, when mixed with water, forms a type of ‘goo’ which is very viscous by nature. It is this characteristic which helps to prevent waste matter in the bowels from drying up, thus making it easier to pass.

Psyllium Husks and Oat fibre are useful types of fibre because they are so soluble by nature.

The ‘gooey’ effect of soluble fibre also makes it useful for our general well-being as well as bowel health. The gel the fibre forms in the gut also delays the absorption of sugar from food and this may be beneficial to Diabetics.
